Natural honey is one of nature’s most delicious creations. It begins as flower nectar, which honeybees collect and naturally transform into the thick, golden honey we enjoy.
Let’s understand how this beautiful journey happens—from flower to jar.
What Is Natural Honey?
Natural honey is produced by honeybees using nectar collected from flowers. Its colour, taste and aroma depend on the flowers, location and harvesting season.
That’s why mustard, ajwain and multiflora honey can have different flavours, colours and textures. These natural variations are completely normal.
How Do Bees Make Honey?
1. Collecting Flower Nectar : Worker bees visit flowers and collect nectar using their long tongues. They carry this nectar back to the hive in a special internal pouch known as the honey stomach.
2. Transforming the Nectar : Natural enzymes inside the bee begin changing the nectar’s sugar composition. The nectar may then be passed between worker bees for further processing.
3. Storing It in Honeycomb : The bees deposit the processed nectar inside hexagonal honeycomb cells. At this stage, it is still thin and contains too much moisture.

4. Removing Excess Moisture : Bees fan their wings to circulate air throughout the hive. This helps water evaporate, gradually turning the nectar into thick honey.
5. Sealing the Honey : Once the honey has matured, the bees seal each cell with a thin layer of beeswax. This is called capping and helps keep the honey protected.
How Is Natural Honey Harvested?
Responsible beekeepers select frames containing mature, capped honey while leaving enough food for the colony.
The wax caps are carefully removed, and the frames are placed inside a honey extractor. The extracted honey is then strained to remove small wax particles, allowed to settle and packed hygienically into clean jars.
Why Does Natural Honey Crystallize?
Crystallization is a natural process caused by the glucose present in honey. It can make honey look creamy, grainy or semi-solid.
Crystallized honey is not necessarily spoiled or fake. Different honey varieties simply crystallize at different speeds.
To make it liquid again, place the closed jar in mildly warm water. Avoid overheating it.
Natural Honey vs Raw Honey
Natural honey generally means honey made by bees from flower nectar without artificial sweeteners being added.
Raw honey usually refers to honey that has been minimally processed and not exposed to excessive heat.
Always check the label and purchase honey from a trusted brand.
How Should You Store Honey?
Keep honey in a tightly closed jar in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Always use a clean, dry spoon and avoid allowing water to enter the jar.
